I was practicing the kata Gojushiho Ni and noticed there was stuff in my kata. I don't know where, when or how I picked it up. I know it is not how I used to execute the kata.
Inside block or knife hand?
Scooping block or knife hand?
Timing on a block/strike.
Hands palm out, palm in or one hand palm out and one hand palm in?
I have identified the "stuff" now all I need to do is unlearn.
Wouldn't it be nice if there was a Undo button? :)

Sometimes I pickup "stuff" from classmates. Those of us of a similar (or higher) rank help each other in class and (sometimes) the help we provide isn't always "right." Sometimes I pickup stuff from competitions or people I practice with totally by accident. (Like I switched out a heel-stomp with a forward thrust kick in one of my katas...didn't even realize I did it until after I performed the kata.) And sometimes, I just forget...I've been adding an extra block to tokimeni no kun for months and no one (not even my sensei) realize it until I was teaching the kata to someone else. Go figure.
I don't want an undo button though. Every mistake I make, makes me a better karateka. When you learn by "doing" you're really learning my F'ing something up. ;)
Hi Stacy,
Thank you for commenting and visiting my blog! You bring up a good point about learning from mistakes. We spent one class examining the different applications between using a knife hand and an inside block in Gojushiho Ni. A small change that made a big difference and a nice learning opportunity.
